INTRODUCTION
Funded by the London Mayor’s Air Quality Fund, Tom Pearman was commissioned to design a series of enamel signs to be located within the Brockley area, in South London.
The locations included a public library, a public house, a station cafe and 3 local schools. Each artwork has a different positive message on a different opening box that contains ‘CLEANER AIR’.
It is hoped through this socially engaged public art scheme and through active public consultation combined with educational art and clean air themed workshops, that the artworks will help foster a collaborative and creative approach towards promoting cleaner air quality.
Tom managed the project in its entirety, establishing relationships with the local authority, relevant community groups and local businesses. He conducted a series of educational programmes in two local schools that informed the designs of the artworks and attended community meetings and public assemblies to gather opinions for the scheme and to inform the public of the project’s ambitions and aims. Tom managed the installation of the artworks at the different locations ensuring that all the sites and the corresponding businesses were informed of all key stages of the scheme.

THERE IS A RISING CALL FOR MORE TO BE DONE TO SEE LONDON’S AIR QUALITY IMPROVE.
This Public Art project has been funded through the London Mayor’s Air Quality Fund, to raise the profile and engage with the local community on local air quality. Change requires action by all. Lewisham Council have revised their Air Quality Action Plan and are working closely with the Greater London Authority to continue to bring improvements. Recent improvements have include the introduction of the 20 mph zone throughout Lewisham Highway roads, which is expected to reduce congestion and associated air quality emissions. There needs to be a choice of alternatives to conventional car use when choosing to travel if emissions are to be reduced. Lewisham is increasing its sustainable transport infrastructure, by expanding the electric vehicle charging point network and providing more options for cycling and walker friendly routes, and is actively engaging in the London Mayor’s proposal for expanding the Ultra Low Emission Zone, which will be a significant step forward in bringing Lewisham’s air quality within acceptable health limits.
